When portable is enough — and when it's false economy
A portable 50-pint unit is fine for one damp room you occupy: a bedroom, a home office, a small finished basement you use daily. It becomes false economy when the moisture problem is structural — a crawl space, an unfinished basement, or whole-house humidity. Portables can't be ducted, most need their bucket emptied (or a jury-rigged hose), and their 1–2 year typical lifespan means you may buy two or three of them in the time one pro-grade unit runs. The full breakdown is inportable vs. whole-house dehumidifier.
